John Gordon Herndon, 74, widower of Starliss B. Herndon of 436 Sterling Street, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016 at his residence.
Mr. Herndon was born on November 5, 1941 in Charlottesville, Virginia a son of the late John Edward Herndon and Mary (Payne) Staton.
Gordon was employed at the Underpass Gas Station as an attendant. He loved animals (never letting them go hungry), sports, and the history of the different teams. He especially loved his children and family and will be sorely missed. Mr. Herndon had many favorite sayings, life is too short, do unto others as you would have them do unto you, nothing is more important than family, and when you give your word, it is a bond, and live it that way.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Flora (Douglass) and Edward Carson Herndon and his maternal grandparents, Willie and Werner Payne.
Surviving are four sons, Kenneth Scott Robertson, Rodney Herndon and his wife Kim, Christopher K. Herndon and his wife Kim, and Mark E. Herndon and his wife Sandy; four daughters, Kim Robertson, Janet Robertson, Tracy Nolen and her husband Allen, and Karen P. Herndon and her husband John Hill; grandchildren, Jessica, Savhanna, Cody, Shawn, Jacob, Nick, Brook, Billy, Chris, Jr., Samantha, Heather, Ashley, Jordon, Brittany, Bethany, Brandon, Michelle, Misty and Holly; great-grandchildren, Tre, Otis, Shelby, Landon, Caleb, Malory, Aydien and Braewick; a brother, Jerry Herndon and his wife Thelma; three beloved aunts, Ruth Turner, Mickey Collier, and Gene Breeden and her husband Edward; two nephews, Bradley Herndon and Steven Herndon; and numerous cousins, great nieces and nephews also survive.
A Memorial gathering will be held 4:00 p.m.Sunday, August 20, 2017, 436 Sterling Street, Staunton.
The family would like to thank the Palliative Care and Hospice staff, Dr. Baraco and his caring team members, Rochelle, Amy, Nina, Kristen, Kathy, and Chaplain Mark at Augusta Hospice of the Shenandoah for the love and care shown to Mr. Herndon during his illness. A special Thank you to Care Advantage, especially his caregiver, Tracy Lawson.
