Gene Allen Thurber, 80, husband of Sheila Ann (Townsend) Thurber, of 183 Skyview Circle passed away Monday, September 1, 2014 at his residence.
Gene was born May 9, 1934 in Laurel Hill, a son of the late Clinton William and Etta Florence (Wills) Thurber.
Mr. Thurber was a longtime member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a 1951 graduate from Wilson High School and he retired from Westinghouse-Snyder General in 1996 after thirty-three years of service, where he was employed as an assembler. Gene was a kind and gentle man and enjoyed woodworking.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Thurber was preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Ann Back.
Surviving in addition to his wife of fourteen years, is a brother, Charles William Thurber of Verona; two brothers-in-law, Clay Back of Staunton
and Newton Brown Townsend, Jr. of Greenville; several cousins and many special friends, also survive.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A Celebration of life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014 in St. Pauls United Methodist Church by Rev. Wade Munford and Pastor T. Bryson Smith.
Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Charles Biller, Douglas Carpenter and Newton Townsend, Jr.

United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 2000 Shutterlee Mill Road, Staunton, Virginia 24401.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
