Willie Johnson Clark, also known by many as Melvin and Jack, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at the age of 87.
Born on June 8, 1938, in Irish Creek, Virginia, Willie was a lifelong resident of Staunton, where he built a legacy of love, laughter, and adventure.
Willie is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Toby Ann Clark, and their two sons, Kevin Clark of Stuarts Draft, Virginia, and Derek Clark of Staunton, Virginia. He is also survived by his sister, Thelma Wiseman of Cleveland, Tennessee and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rosa Mae Clark and Wildridge Clark, as well as his brothers, Joseph and Clarence Clark, and sisters, Pauline Ward and Margie Zawhorodny.
Throughout his life, Willie was known for his hard work and dedication. He worked as a heavy equipment operator, trucker, and general contractor, retiring in 1993. Willie’s passion for the outdoors was evident in his love for hunting and fishing, while his appreciation for old westerns and classic cars brought him much joy.
One of Willie’s greatest adventures was hitchhiking to California in the 1960’s, a journey that sparked countless stories he loved to share. His tales of youth, work experiences, and the wonderful people he met captivated all who listened. Willie was quick with a smile and a kind word, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Above all, Willie cherished his family and his faith. He attended Grubert Avenue Church of God and often spoke of his love for the Lord, sharing his spiritual journey and the importance of faith in his life. Willie will be greatly missed by his family and friends, who will remember him for his warmth, kindness, and the many stories that enriched their lives.
Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, April 6, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory in Staunton.
A celebration of Willie’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Jerry Thomas.
Burial will follow in Irish Creek Community Cemetery in Irish Creek, Virginia.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
