William Douglas Cox, 91, husband of Margaret (Cline) Cox, of Staunton, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017 in Augusta Health in Fishersville.
Mr. Cox was born on May 14, 1926, in Augusta County, a son of the late Hallah W. and Alma (Quick) Cox.
William was a lifelong member of Pleasant View Evangelical Lutheran Church, was a proud veteran of the Merchant Marines during WWII and a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Cox retired from Smiths Transfer Trucking Corporation and was a life member and past commander of the American Legion Post #13. He was an avid golfer and woodworker.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Cox was preceded in death by two brothers, James W. Cox and Samuel J. Cox; three sisters, Betty McKay, Martha Whedbee, and Sue Painter; and a niece, Cherie (Painter) Collins.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 67 years, is a son, Michael D. Cox and his wife Tammy of Mt. Sidney; a brother, Fred B. Cox of Mt. Sidney; a sister, Mary Jane Farmer, of Mechanicsville; a brother-in-law, L. Douglas Painter of Staunton; a sister-in-law, Jean Cox, of Staunton; and a number of nieces and nephews survive.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2017 in the Pleasant View Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor Mark Briehl.
The family will receive friends following the service and other times at the residence of his son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Tammy Cox, 59 Wine Hollow Lane, Mt. Sidney, Virginia 24467.
The family wishes to extend a special Thank You to caregivers, Debby Pritchett and Tonia Mattingley for the love, care and support given to Mr. Cox and his family.
