Virginia Alene (Gaylor) Bowden, 90, widow of Thomas Herndon Bowden of 217 Ramsey Gap Road died peacefully at her home Tuesday, January 3, 2012.
Mrs. Bowden was born February 3, 1921 in Covington, VA, a daughter of the late James Albert and Lottie Elizabeth (Robertson) Gaylor.
Mrs. Bowden was a life-long resident of Augusta County and raised seven children in the family home. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. A godly woman, she was a faithful member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church where she attended until her declining health.
Mrs. Bowden married the late Thomas Herndon Bowden on July 10, 1941, a union in marriage for more than fifty years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Bowden was preceded in death by a son, William Guy Bowden, on November 24, 2011, a brother, Calvin Gaylor and two sisters, Maxine Brooks and Barbara Balser.
Mrs. Bowden is survived by three sons, James H. Bowden and his wife Margie of Rockbridge Baths, Eugene J. Bowden and his wife Vickie of Craigsville and Charles W. Bowden and his wife Debbie of Goshen; three daughters, Bernadine C. Reid and her husband Larry of Goshen, Delores B. Puckett and her husband Charlie of Craigsville and Carolyn B. Byram and her husband Clarence of Goshen; a brother, Floyd Gaylor of Waynesboro and a sister, Jean Rotolone of Front Royal; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren also survive.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 6, 2012 at the Lebanon Presbyterian Church by Pastor Linwood Wilkes. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012 in the Coffman Funeral Home and other times at the residence of her daughter and sonin-law, Carolyn and Clarence Byram, 513 Bashaw Road, Goshen, VA.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Burke, Jonathan Bowden, Stevie Campbell, Cory Bowden, Michael Bowden and Donald Minter.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Bowdens granddaughters and Ken Gladfelter, Dennis Hatkevich, Garner Byram and Frank Smith.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to the Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, Post Office Box 98, Craigsville, VA 24430.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
