Verna Evelyn (Middleton) Burke Shoop passed away at Kings Daughters Nursing Home in Staunton Virginia Sept 25, 2016.
She was born on Sept 22, 1928 in Kalamazoo, MI
Verna lost her mother when she was 14 and left to find her way at an early age caring for her siblings. She met and married Darreld Russell Shoop at the end of World War II and began farming in upstate New York.
Verna and Darreld had 6 children by 1958 when they decided to sell the farm and he entered the ministry. Vernas heart was always in the farm and she found it difficult to manage the demands of being a ministers wife. Verna enjoyed gardening and would plant fruit trees at each new home hoping to provide fruit for the next pastors family. Verna and family moved to Virginia in 1966. She completed the Nursing program to be an LPN. She was a very caring and loving person and her career suited her perfectly. Verna retired in 1990.Verna and Darreld spent their remaining years together first at a home in Goochland and their last 4 years in Staunton. Verna spent the last 3 years being wonderfully cared for by Kings Daughters Nursing Home.
Verna was predeceased by her mother Dorothy Anderson Middleton and father Harold Stanley Middleton and her husband Rev. Darreld Russell Shoop.
She is survived by their eight children, thirty-five grandchildren, fifty-eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Her children include: Cynthia Williams, Dorothy Hartwell, Russ Shoop II and wife Sharon, David Shoop, Paul Shoop and wife Vali, Philip Shoop and wife Sandy, Valerie Johnson and husband Larry, and Joseph Shoop and wife Debra.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A Service of interment will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2016 in the Oakwood UMC Columbia, VA 23038.
A Celebration of the Life of Verna M Burke (Shoop) will be conducted 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 30th in Calvary Baptist Church, Staunton by Pastor Mike Smith.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
