Obituary

Vaughn Franklin Kimbrell, 89, husband of Carolyn Clarkson (Kinzie) Carpenter of 59 William Cousins Road passed away Thursday, June 30, 2016 at his residence.
Mr. Kimbrell was born on February 18, 1927 in Sanford, Florida, a son of the late Allen Franklin and Bertie (Smith) Kimbrell.
Vaughn was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a Retired Lt Col of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict. He later was stationed in Japan, serving active duty for nine years and the Army Reserves for seventeen years. Vaughn retired from Westinghouse where he was employed as a Field Service Technician. Following retirement, Mr. Kimbrell continued his career part time with J\u0026R Heating and Plumbing as a heating and cooling technician. Mr. Kimbrell was a former volunteer with the Staunton Fire and Rescue Squad, he enjoyed carpentry, photography, reading and traveling with his wife Carolyn.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Kimbrell was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Frances (Smith) Kimbrell; and two brothers, James Henderson and Leon Henderson.
Mr. Kimbrell was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving in addition to his wife of sixteen years, is a son, David Allen Kimbrell and his wife Paula of Norman, Oklahoma; a daughter, Laura K. Vines and her husband James F. Jim of Verona; three step-sons, Paul S. Kinzie and his wife Holly of Reston, Jacob R. Kinzie and wife Jennifer of Radford and Thomas Sidney Carpenter, IV and his wife Brittany of Afton; three granddaughters, Kristen Leigh Abercrombie and husband Dan, Ashley Laura Spiker and husband Matt and Elizabeth (Vines) Stover and husband John; and three great-granddaughters, Kathryn Abercombie, Gabrielle Spiker and Willow Stover; three step-grandchildren, Andrew Kinzie, Lauren Kinzie and Madelyn Carpenter; a niece, Gail Henderson; and a cousin, Bernadeen Stafford also survive.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016 in Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Speaker Mike Swinson with burial to follow in Thornrose Cemetery.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to the Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad, Post Office Box 2566, Staunton, Virginia 24402 or the Swoope Volunteer Fire Department, 697 Parkersburg Turnpike, Staunton, Virginia 24401.
The family wishes to express a sincere Thank You to the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah and care giver, Lisa Pennington for the special care given to Mr. Kimbrell.
