Thomas Grey "Tommy" Mace, Sr., 87, husband of Jennie Mae (Forbes) Mace, a resident of Hermitage Roanoke, Roanoke, Virginia, entered the gates of heaven on Tuesday, December 8, 2020, following a battle with COVID-19.
Tommy was born in Healing Springs, Virginia on September 29, 1933, a son of the late William Wheeler and Laura Rebecca (Keyser) Mace. He moved with his family to Jolivue, Virginia in 1945.
Tommy was a resident of Augusta County and Staunton until February of 2020 when he moved to Hermitage Roanoke. He attended Beverley Manor School and Wilson Memorial High School, where he excelled in all sports. His love for sports continued throughout his entire life, as well as his love for hunting and fishing. Tommy was happiest when outdoors, enjoying nature through golf, gardening, hunting, and fishing.
Tommy met the love of his life, Jennie Mae Forbes, at Wilson and they were married on July 11, 1953; together, they had three children. Tommy instilled a great love of God, family, and work ethic in his children and all that knew him.
Tommy began his career at DuPont and then was a longtime employee of C\u0026P Telephone Company. He was an active member of the Telephone Pioneers. Tommy was also very active with his Wilson Alumni in planning many class reunions and get-togethers.
Tommy was a member of Beverley Street Methodist Church and Christ United Methodist Church for many years. In 1974, Tommy and his family became active members of Memorial Baptist Church, where Tommy served as a deacon.
In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by three sisters, Millicent (who died in infancy), Gloria Mace Wood, and Shirley Mace Wilfong.
Surviving in addition to Jennie, his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, are three children and their spouses, Thomas Grey "T.G." Mace, Jr. and Ginger (Gilbert) of Swoope, Martha Mace Nicholas and Jim of Roanoke, and Natalie Mace Talbott and Kip of Roanoke.
Known as "Pawpaw", Tommy is survived by his six grandchildren, Amy Mace Davenport (Tony) of Staunton, Amanda Mace Clark (Jonathan "Q") of Staunton, Angela Mace of Swoope, Christopher Nicholas (Natalie) of Roanoke, Adam Nicholas (Emily) of Arlington, and Lyndsay Talbott and fianc, Brandon Wells of Roanoke. Tommy's pride and joy were his five great-grandchildren, Anthony, Brooke, Brittany, Saige, and Declan. Tommy is also survived by his loving sister, Irene Mace Traylor of Florida; sisters- and brothers-in-law; and cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A private graveside service will be held in Augusta Memorial Park by Reverend Mark Jones.
