Thomas Edward Chink Johnson, 84, husband of Helen Christine (Rexrode) Johnson of 299 Straith Street passed away Thursday, July 9, 2015 in Augusta Health, Fishersville.
Mr. Johnson was born in Amherst County, Virginia on August 23, 1930 a son of the late Grover Cleveland Johnson, Sr. and Rachel (Campbell) Johnson Massie.
Mr. Johnson was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, he retired from the United States Army, serving his country for 23 years during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and was retired from Coca Cola Bottling Company after 22 years of service as an office manager. Tom was an avid sportsman, he enjoyed baseball, was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan, he enjoyed watching and playing golf and bowling. He also enjoyed coaching and umpiring mens softball and he was a volunteer at the Augusta Regional Free Clinic.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a brother Andrew Jackson Johnson.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 63 years are three sons, David Burton Johnson and his wife Connie of Clinton, Utah, Douglas Edward Johnson and his wife Carol Sue of Stuarts Draft and Daniel Eugene Johnson and his wife Marcia of Palmyra, VA; two daughters, Linda Elaine (Johnson) Hutson and her husband Gary and Lori Jean Johnson both of Staunton; brother, Grover C. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Carolyn of Greenville; a sister-in-law, Janice Johnson of Stuarts Draft; thirteen grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, James Johnson, Jennifer Rolfsness, Zackary Hutson, Jacob Hutson, Mary Ann (Johnson) Long, Thomas Johnson, Ryan Moats, Mallory Moats, Nicole Geary, Natasha Johnson, Kimberly Johnson and Christa Newton; fifteen great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2015 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the residence.
A Celebration of life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2015 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Michael Long.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
Active Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Zackary Hutson, Jacob Hutson, Ryan Moats, Thomas Johnson, Christopher Johnson and Scott Rolfsness.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends attending the service.
