IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Steven Charles
Lay
September 13, 1950 – March 31, 2025
Steven Charles Lay, 74, husband of Nancy Sparks Lay, of Staunton, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2025 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Mr. Lay was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts on September 13, 1950, a son of the late Charles and Dorothy Lay.
Steven was a dedicated member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church, where he served as a team leader for building and grounds. A passionate musician, he found joy in playing the banjo and harmonica at the church's "Music Jam" every Tuesday.
Among his many passions, cooking held a special place in his heart—he took great pride in preparing Thanksgiving dinner for his family each year. Always on the move, Steven had a vibrant spirit and cherished moments of relaxation in the great outdoors, especially camping. He was also an avid reader who found solace in books.
Steven and his wife, Nancy, shared 50 wonderful years of marriage—a bond many admired and aspired to have. He was a devoted husband who took great care of his wife and treasured his family above all else. His kindness, humor, energy, and love for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Surviving, in addition to his beloved wife, are four children, Robert Lay of Pittsfield, MA, Daniel Lay and his wife, Becky of Jacksonville, NC, Jennifer Favazza and her husband, Carlo and Karen Lay all of Marlborough, MA; four siblings, David Lay and his wife, Helen of Cumberland, ME, Charlene Adams and her husband, David of Pownal, VT, Judy Sargent and her husband, Harold of Irving, TX, and Karen Holt and her husband, Lee of Franklin, MA; nine grandchildren, Makenzie, Serenity, Cameron, Preston, Sarah, Alyssa, Brendan, Kristian, and Ethan; a number of nieces and nephews; and his beloved furry friend, "Lizzie."
A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, 2025 at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church, 535 Pine Ave, Waynesboro, by Reverend Paul Oakley.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
