Shirley B. Swann
STAUNTON:
Shirley Edna (Barker) Swann, 83, wife of Thomas J. Tom Swann of 1864 E Springhill Road, Staunton passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
She was born February 2, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland, a daughter of the late Harry S. Barker of Boxwood, Virginia and Bertha M. (Weber) Barker of Baltimore, Maryland.
Mrs. Swann was a member of the Olivet Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and an active member of the Ladies Boumi Temple Shiners Mounted Patrol. Her greatest satisfaction came from her love for quilting. In the 1980s through 2000 she won multiple awards, such as, Best in Show at the National Quilter Association events, a Mountain Mist Best of Show award, multiple 1st prize awards at the Maryland State Fair (equivalent to Best in Show), multiple Grand Champion Awards at Howard County, Maryland and West Friendship, Maryland Fairs and Rosehill Manor Best Judges Award and the Peoples Choice Award at the Mennonite Quilting Event.
For all those who knew her well best respected her for her strength and willingness to fight through years of physical pain and suffering. She loved life, her family and felt blessed for each day that she had in this life. Now we all feel blessed for each day that she is without pain and with her heavenly Father.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Swann was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Lee Taylor.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 43 years is a daughter, Carol Chase Orlowski and husband Robert of Houston, Texas; two grandchildren, Stacey Taylor Kern and husband Michael and Kelley Taylor Cock and husband John; seven great grandchildren, Nathan, Benjamin and Samuel Kern and Lyndon, Preston, Caleb and Meron Cock; a son-in-law, Edwin M. Taylor of Conover, NC; a brother-in-law, Charles Yoe and wife Lynne; special friends, Charles and Judy Shifflett of Waynesboro and many special nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of life will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2012 in Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Harry E. Johns, Jr.
Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery,
The family will receive friends 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012 in Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton.
