Obituary

Samuel Grant Holmes, Jr., 62, husband of Alice Flookey (Monroe) Holmes of Waynesboro, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 in Augusta Health in Fishersville.

Mr. Holmes was born on March 1, 1954 in Abington, a son of Georgia (Widener) Holmes and the late Samuel Grant Holmes, Sr.

Samuel attended Fishersville Baptist Church and retired from Dupont / Invista in 2014. He served on the Executive Board and Treasurer of Special Olympics, Virginia Area 5. A favorite hobby for Sam was enjoying the all day card games with Big Guy, Wife and Aunt Muldin. Mr. Holmes had many unique qualities that made him a wonderful man but perhaps the greatest one was to always put the needs of others before his own.

In addition to his father, Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by a brother, Daryll Holmes; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thurman and Gladys Monroe; sister-in-law, Sandy Arnette and a brother-in-law, J. D. Mejia.

Surviving in addition to his wife of 20 years and his mother of Kernersville, North Carolina are two sons, Brian S. Holmes and his wife Sherry of Fishersville and Michael S. Holmes of Waynesboro; four brothers, Robert Holmes and his wife Yvonne of New Hope, Randy Holmes and his wife Melody of Lyndhurst, Dennis Holmes and his wife Theresa of Waynesboro and Steven Holmes and his wife Iris Anne of Stuarts Draft; a sister, Sandra Martin and her husband Don of Kernersville, N.C.; a brother-in-law, Dale Monroe and his wife Shirley of Stuart, FL; a sister in Heart, Marilyn Mejia of Fishersville; as well as a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2016 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the residence.

A Celebration of life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2016 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Donald Martin and Rev. Steve Lookabaugh.

Burial will follow in Augusta Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Bob Holmes, Brian Holmes, Steve Holmes, Keith Branch, Shannon Combs and Bob Simmons.

Honorary pallbearers will be David Brown, Everett Pitsenbarger, Donnie Taylor, Nelson Carter, Barry Linke, Denny Henderson, Carolyn Gum, Barbara Mayo, Tammy Wilkins and Chem Lab Employees.

To honor Sams quiet lifelong dedication to helping special needs individuals, donations may be made to the Special Olympics, Virginia Area 5, Post Office Box 1381, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980 or the Arc of Augusta, 1025 Fairfax Avenue, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980.
