Sally Beth (Shilling) Hicks's Obituary

Sally Beth (Shilling) Hicks, 74, widow of Robert Lee Hicks, Jr. Of Staunton, passed away Friday, May 28, 2021 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

Sally was born in Virginia on January 18, 1947, a daughter of the late Clinton Roy and Lillian (Lane) Shilling.

She was a devout Christian and could often be found on her porch or in her kitchen listening to her "radio programs" on WNLR. She was passionate about their teaching and ministry, and spent many hours pouring over God's word and worshipping along with them.

Sally loved spending time with her family and friends. She greatly looked forward to frequent luncheons and get-togethers with her high school friends whom she affectionately called "the Gap girls". Sally was active in church choir and activities for many years and enjoyed being involved in volunteer work related to her daughter and granddaughter's activities. A homemaker and stay at home mom, Sally always took time to read a story, bake a new recipe with her granddaughter, create an elaborate last minute costume, or prepare a delicious meal and invite family in for fellowship. Her house was known as "home" to many over the years, because of her gift of hospitality.

Sally loved to create. She called herself a "tinker". She could fix anything and create something out of seemingly nothing. She loved a good challenge and her imagination and creativity flowed freely into everything she did. She loved to write stories, paint, decorate, and garden.

Of all the things Sally loved, her most treasured time was spent with her daughter and granddaughter. She expressed often that they were her greatest pride and joy, and everyone who met her got to hear about them-- and often see pictures. She greatly looked forward to each ballet recital and demonstration, attended swim meets faithfully for many years, and loved to go shopping and have lunch with "her girls".

While Sally will be missed greatly, her family is overjoyed knowing that she is finally with her Lord and savior.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary Josephine (Shilling) Shannon, Frank Shilling, and Danny Shilling; Treasured sister-in-laws Lenore Shilling and Beverly Shilling, and step daughter Donna Lewis.

Surviving is a daughter, Stephanie (Hicks) Neal; a granddaughter, Aislynn Lilliana Neal; and a brother, Clinton Shilling; sister-in-law, Delores Shilling and numerous nieces and nephews.
