Obituary

Our dear family member and friend to many, Roger B. Ryder, 82, passed from the present life on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at his residence.

He was born in West Virginia on October 20, 1943, son of the late Alfred Brown and Fannie Ruth (Spencer) Ryder.

The Ryders moved shortly after their son’s birth and established a home and farm near Spring Hill, Virginia. Having had his grandfather living on the farm with him as he was growing up, Roger, as an adult enjoyed sharing his memories of his learnings about farm life with others.

Roger attended Centerville Elementary School and North River High School. Following his graduation, he attended business school in Staunton and later worked at a local bank. He eventually blended his interest in building and remodeling with cars and trucks. He became a local contractor and a used car dealer for many years.

Roger recently became a 50-year member of the Staunton Moose and Staunton Eagles. Over the years, he spent many hours supporting each organization and enjoying the friendships he made by sharing a few cold brews at each place regularly.

Roger is survived by his son, Shannon Ryder of Parnassus; a sister and brother-in-law, Beverly and Jerry Van Lear; nieces, Wendy Saylor and Heather Davis; and his long time significant other, Joyce Barney.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026 at Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens by Reverend William “Bill” Trice.

Roger requested “no suit, no tie” for his burial attire, and the family encourages those attending his visitation and service to dress casually.

The family kindly requests that there be no visitors at the residence during this time of grief.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
