Rodney Bonck, Jr., 95, widower of Katherine (Coiner) Bonck, formerly of Grinding Mill Lane, Verona, passed away Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the Kings Daughter Community Health and Rehabilitation Center in Staunton.
Mr. Bonck was born on November 4, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Rodney, Sr. and Jessie (Paton) Bonck.
Rodney was a member and Elder of Old Providence ARP Church and retired from the Army Reserve in 1965 and from Civil Service as a Reserve Affairs Officer in 1977. He graduated from Abington High School with honors and joined the military as WWII had started. Mr. Bonck entered into the Army Air Corps and eventually in the Intelligence Office. He was sent to the Battle of the Bulge and after the Germans surrendered, he held the position of Chief Clerk of the Freight Section of the Third Military RR Service. His service ended in February, 1946 and was discharged as a TSgt, and after the war he received a direct commission as a 2nd Lt. in the Transportation Corps, eventually rising to Major. Rodney was a member of the Verona VFW Post 10826, the American Legion Post 0013, and the Resident Officers Association.
In addition to his parents and second wife, Mr. Bonck was preceded in death by his first wife, Adeline Bonck.
Surviving are his children, Lorelei A. Garrett and her husband Wallace of Mt. Holly, North Carolina, Rodney H. Bonck and his wife Kathleen of Alexandria, and Heather K. Hinson and her husband Rick of Riner, VA; a brother J. Allen Bonck and wife Marge of Waynesboro; and five grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 4, 2019 in Old Providence ARP Church by Reverend Patrick D. Malphrus.
The family will receive friends following the service.
Entombment will be held in the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
