Obituary

Robert Harvill, affectionately known as "Bub", 93, passed away after a courageous fight with a brief illness, on March 31, 2023, in Staunton, Virginia.  Bub was lovingly welcomed at the pearly gates by Becky "Bec", his wife of 70 years, daughter Kim, parents Robert Warren Harvill, Sr. and Kathryn Thrasher Miller, sisters Kathryn Moore and Ella Louise Plunkett and countless (and very loved) family pets.

He is survived by five living children:  Anne Harvill, Lindsey Munson (James), Allison Parsons (Doug), Robert "Chip" Harvill III (Karmen) and Matt Harvill (Kim).  He is also survived by eleven grandchildren:  Hunter Smith, McKenzie Woodard, Caitlin Madden, Jake Schwab, Rob Harvill, Sid Harvill, Madison Howard, Reagan Harvill, Peyton Harvill, Carson Harvill, Abby Gammon and eight great-grandchildren: Harper Woodard, Palmer Woodard, Davis Woodard, Amelia Madden, Lindy Madden, Warren Harvill, Hudson Harvill and Lincoln Harvill.

Since graduating as a loyal Hokie from Virginia Tech in 1952, Bub has remained an avid fan and supporter of any and every Hokie sport.  He was especially proud of his military career, serving four years in the Navy, and decades following in the Naval Reserves, retiring as Captain.  In 1956, Bub began his long and very successful career at Westinghouse.  He spent most of these years as the controller of the plant's commercial-industrial division as well as a consultant for international new business.

Family came first to Bub.  He married his beautiful bride, Bec, in 1952 and has since carried her picture in his wallet with the loving inscription "I surely do love you an awful lot, honey! Becky."  Bub and Bec established roots in Staunton, wishing to settle our family in the small town they would forever call home.  During his career with Westinghouse, Bub passed over several opportunities so our family could remain in Staunton.  However, in 1967, with a bit of reluctance, he accepted a relocation to Wellesley, Massachusetts.  Moving to Wellesley was like the Clampetts moving to Beverly Hills, where push-button phones and extravagant birthday parties were the norm, however, Bub and Bec quickly realized "there's no place like home".  We will always remember, after being in Wellesley less than one year, Bub proudly announcing at the dinner table that we were moving back to Staunton. The icing on the cake being, not only were we moving back to Staunton, but to the same house and best neighborhood ever.  Yes, family did come first to Bub.

As years passed, Bub and Bec moved the family to the perfect home across town, one that provided the best playground ever for us and their future grandchildren (Gypsy Hill Park) and was next door to Robert E. Lee High School, where Bec taught, and we would later attend.  What amazing memories were made in that home (some unbeknownst to Bub and Bec during their vacation trip to Europe).

When approaching retirement, Bub discovered the love of woodworking.  Each Christmas, he would walk us down the stairs to his woodworking shop and proudly uncover six identical, handmade treasures he had lovingly made throughout the year.  Today, our homes are sprinkled with these cherished handmade treasures from Bub.  In addition to woodworking, he enjoyed many other pastimes, including poker night with his dear friends (with a sock full of coins in tow), tennis with his buddies and special nephew Eddie, biking with Bec down country roads and on bike tours outside of the country, as well as sneaking into the kitchen after dinner to get his nightly stash of cupcakes or Oreos.

Bub will always be fondly remembered for his "Bubisms" - defined by his family as the art of taking a word and unintentionally finding the funniest way to scramble it.  These unexpected word treats never failed to provide a belly laugh for anyone that was fortunate enough to be listening.

Writing obituaries for both Mom and Dad within the past year has been difficult, but also a gift; allowing our family time to reflect on the cherished memories of our parents and the traditions they created which will shape and influence our families for generations to come.

Our family would like to thank the staff at Brightview Baldwin Park for providing Mom and Dad such a warm and caring environment to thrive in over the past decade.  To the staff at Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab, we are forever grateful for the loving care offered to Bub over the last few challenging weeks.

Burial will be private.
