Obituary

Ricky Lewis Ayers, 63, was born in Buckingham County on September 29, 1960, to the late Lewis Chambers and Cassie (Ayers) Mosley. Ricky unexpectedly passed away on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at his residence in Staunton, Virginia.

As a young man, Ricky attended Buckingham High School and spent many summers working in a tobacco work program in Hartford, Connecticut. When he was 18 years old, Mr. Ayers began working for Con-Agra Frozen Foods, staying there for 20 plus years until they closed. He then went on to work for Perdue Farms and retired after 22 years of service as a heavy machinery mechanic.

Mr. Ayers was a member of Morning Valley Baptist Church. He was an avid Washington Commanders fan, and enjoyed NASCAR, especially Denny Hamlin. Ricky enjoyed watching western shows and his soaps, including The Young and The Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. He enjoyed nice cars, good music, good food, and spending time with his family. Mr. Ayers was hardworking, committed, strong, and a devoted father and husband.

Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Leroy Chambers and Archie Ayers.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 19 years, Debbie A. Ayers; his five children, Terrie Godfrey, Chandell Massie, Travis Godfrey, Tiara Pryor, and Nathan Ayers; two step-children, Dennis Chaplin and Kelly Chaplin; three brothers, Anthony Chambers (Francine), Samuel Chambers (Barbara), and Timothy Chambers (Karen); two sisters, Quin Rush (William) and Margie Coles (James); grandchildren, Talehzha, Legend, Legacy, Zaelah, A'Zeriah, Zi'aire, Ri'Kel, Khymir, Sonjai, Jahmoni, Kross, Shamon, and Avani; a special cousin and friend, Dennis "Cabbage" Marshall; his furry friend, Mutts; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 29, 2024 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Travis Godfrey, Dennis Chaplin, Nathan Ayers, Jamal Johnson, Steven Allen, and Rico Womack.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
