Ray Franklin Hawkins, 75, husband of Phyllis Mae (Blosser) Hawkins, of Weyers Cave, passed away Friday, July 17, 2009 in Augusta Health in Fishersville.
Mr. Hawkins was born October 23, 1933 in Augusta County, a son of the late Roy Elvin and Gertrude (Holtz) Hawkins.
Ray retired in 1998 as a self-employed flooring and tile sub- contractor. He was known for playing music with the Dallas Band a band that was most popular in the mid to late 70s, he enjoyed listening to all types of music and getting together with his friends doing a Monday night Jam Session at his home. Ray had a love for wood working, fishing, traveling to his second home at the Outer Banks and talking with people. It is said that by those who knew Ray that He never met a Stranger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son David Michael Hawkins.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are two sons and daughters-in-law, Frankie Hawkins and his wife Barbara B. of Stanley and Kenny E. Hawkins and his wife Julie L. of Swoope; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda L. Lynch and her husband Courtney J. of West Lafayette, Ohio and Connie Sue OBrien and her husband Patrick J. of Zanesville, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Ethan, Carter, Elizabeth, Andrew, David, Melanie, P.J., Kevin and Carrie; five great-grandchildren, Erin, Cody, Christina, Carter and Harrison and a very close and special friend, Howell Shearouse.
Burial is private and their will be no public viewing.
A memorial service will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, (July 25, 2009) in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 417 Salem Church Road, Mt. Sidney, by Pastor John Crawford and Childhood Friend, Mr. Lawrence Peck Sheets.
Following the service, the family will have a time of Celebrating Mr. Ray Hawkins Life with music and fellowship at the home of Mr. Lowell Sheets, 257 Mt. Pisgah Road, Mt. Sidney, VA.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to Grace Christian School, 511 South Thornrose Avenue, Staunton, VA 24401 or to the Activities Fund for The Alzheimers Unit at Kings Daughters Community Health and Rehabilitation, 1410 North Augusta Street, Staunton, VA 24401.
