Orville Gardner Byers, 90, widower of Dorothy Virginia (Smith) Byers of Mt. Sidney passed away Friday, February 6, 2015 at his residence.
Mr. Byers was born September 29, 1924 in Mt. Sidney, son of the late Cleveland W. and Irene S. Byers and stepson of the late Ollie C. Byers.
Orville was a member of Lebanon Church of the Brethren. He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II, serving duty in Oran, Africa, and Palmero, Sicily and Naples, Italy. Mr. Byers retired from Western State Hospital in 1989 after 30 years of service in the maintenance department. He was a member of Verona VFW Post 10826, the XYZ Club, and formerly active in the Ruritan Club. Orville enjoyed gardening, growing flowers and was very talented in woodworking. He loved and was loved by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Byers was preceded in death by two sisters, Madeline Byers and Oneitta Cline.
Surviving are three daughters, Lila Porterfield and her husband John, Lida Coffman and her husband Bryan, and Lili Loftis and her husband John; five grandchildren, Lauren and Taylor Loftis, Burke and Charles Porterfield and Marie (Porterfield) Barry; three great-grandchildren, Grace, William, and Cora Porterfield.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Lebanon Church of the Brethren.
A Memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2015 at the Lebanon Church of the Brethren by Pastor Matthew Fike.
Burial will be private in the church cemetery.
Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Verona VFW Post 10826.
