Nancy Lee (Hayes) Whitesell, 85, widow of Arthur N. "Tommy" Whitesell, Jr., formerly of Springhill Road in Staunton, passed away on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Shenandoah Nursing and Rehab in Fishersville.
Mrs. Whitesell was born on April 20, 1936 in Roanoke, Virginia, a daughter of the late James Henry Hayes, Sr. and Mary Bell (Toman) Hayes.
Mrs. Whitesell was an active member of Olivet Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and participated in the Ladies Circle. She was a member of the Staunton-Augusta Lions Club and was a 1955 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton. Nancy was an avid bowler for 40 years and enjoyed talking on the phone, shopping, playing solitaire and socializing with others.
Nancy is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Whitesell was preceded in death by a brother, James Henry "Jimmy" Hayes, Jr. and a sister, Betty (Hayes) Berry.
Surviving are her children, Tommie Sue (Whitesell) Crosby and husband Derik Harris of Virginia Beach, Teresa G. Whitesell and partner Sharon Paxton, Michael S. "Mic" Whitesell and wife Angela, and David A. Whitesell all of Staunton; four grandchildren, Matthew Crosby and wife Mandi, Kimberly Smith and husband Richard, Molly Mauzy and husband Shawn, and Emma Grace Whitesell; six great-grandchildren, Kahlan, Caleb, Michaela, Martha, Sean and Joseph, and one great-great-grandson, Kamari.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 28, 2021 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A Celebration of life will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2021 at Olivet Presbyterian Church by Pastor Lee Thomas.
Burial will follow at Augusta Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be her two sons Michael Whitesell and David Whitesell, Derik Harris, Matthew Crosby, Richard Smith and Sean Wells.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Association Central and Western Virginia Chapter, 355 Rio Road, Charlottesville, Virginia 22901.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
