Mildred Lavina (Satterley) Gleason, 86, formerly of North Coalter Street, passed away Wednesday morning, (January 7, 2009) in the Kings Daughters Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Gleason was born on January 19, 1922 in Johnstown, New York, a daughter of the late Chester Arthur and Mertie Amelia (Hunt) Satterley.
Mildred retired as a secretary from Baugher Chevrolet in Waynesboro and following her retirement Mrs. Gleason enjoyed writing the Quillas Quotes which were published in the Daily News Leader and the Lines of Faith in the Harrisonburg Daily Record for over five years. Mrs. Gleason was an early member of Memorial Baptist Church and the Rebekah Sunday School Class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband in November of 1984, Mr. Bruce O. Strickland and her second husband, in January of 1990, Mr. Horace L. Gleason; two brothers, Henry Satterley and Arthur Satterley; a sister, Mrs. Rose Eno and a granddaughter, Victoria Rezman.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law; Charlotte M. Wise and her husband Robert B. of Stamford, Conn., Bonnie Jo Eisenberg of Fayetteville, N.C. and Sandra S. Sprouse and her husband Fred W. of Staunton; a brother, Earl Satterley of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren, Eric Eisenberg, Traci Rayburn, Michael Rezman, Benjamin Sprouse and Jennifer Wade; nine great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, (January 10, 2009) in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Temple D. Myers.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be her three grandsons Benjamin Sprouse, Michael Rezman, Michael Wade; and Roy Conner, R.M. Stone, Jr. and J.P. Sieck.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Atkins, Lewis Cash, Sr. and members of the Rebekah Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service or at other times the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra S. and Fred Sprouse, 322 Ann Street, Staunton.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to Memorial Baptist Church, 225 Taylor Street, Staunton, Va. 24401.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of the arrangements.
