Merchie Roberta (Childress) Walker, 92, widow of Jay C. Walker, formerly of Old Parkersburg Turnpike passed away Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Augusta Health in Fishersville.
Mrs. Walker was born November 25, 1920 in Craigsville, a daughter of the late Clarence Washington and Annie Bell (Morris) Childress.
Merchie was raised in Craigsville and was a member of the Aneon Union Central Baptist Church. She worked for the late Judge William S. Moffett, Sr. as his housekeeper and retired in 1977 from the Angus Steak House as a cook and waitress; she loved her family, cared for her grandchildren and enjoyed spoiling them with her wonderful cooking.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
Surviving is a daughter, Barbara R. Carter and her friend, Theodore Maddox, Sr. of Staunton; a sister, Sylvia Bernice Jefferson of Washington, DC; seven grandchildren, Charles Carter and his friend Dr. Lisa Miller, Eugene Carter and his wife Stephanie, Michael Carter, Eddie L. Carter and his wife Rebekah, Kelly L. Carter, Sr., Cynthia Diane Carter and Kecia S. Carter and her friend Reggie Waddy; numerous nieces and nephews; twenty-two great-grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; special extended family, Loleader and Isaac Moore, Lottie Hamilton and Lisa Young.
A celebration of life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Elder Jerome H. Jones.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home of her daughter, Barbara R. Carter, 282 Heather Lane, Staunton.
Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Walkers grandsons and Theodore Maddox, Sr., Reggie Waddy and Isaac Moore.
Honorary pallbearers will be Maurice Davenport, William Davenport, Zane Davenport, Mike Nelson, Lorenzo Wells and Kelly Carter, Jr.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
