MELVIN M. WRIGHT
Melvin Miller Wright, 83, husband of Marjorie (Niessen) Margie Wright of Sage Road, Staunton passed away Tuesday (December 2, 2008) in the Augusta Medical Center.
Mr. Wright was born on February 18, 1925 in Washington, D.C. a son of the late Herschel E. and Wavie (Miller) Wright.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Reba Jakubowicz.
Melvin and his wife Margie moved to the Goshen area in 1978 following his retirement from the Arlington County Fire Department where he was a fireman for fifteen years. During his years with the fire department, he served as the Fire Commissioner in Fairfax County and as a Fireman Instructor to other Fire Companies. Melvin was a member of the Goshen Lions Club, he enjoyed hunting, camping, doing small engine repair and he was an avid fan of NASCAR.
Mr. Wright was also an U.S. Veteran of the Army Air Force, serving his country proudly during WWII flying in 39 air assaults as a Gunner and Airplane Mechanic. During his tour in the service, Melvin received the American Campaign Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal; Good Conduct Medal; WWII Victory Medal and the Purple Heart.
In addition to his wife Margie to whom he was married for 62 years, survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law; Robert M. Wright, (who followed the family tradition as a fireman) and his wife Sandra of Bealeton; Jack L. Wright of Sterling; a daughter and son-in-law; Laura A. Melton and her husband David of Staunton; one grandson, Robert M. Wright, II; a great-granddaughter, Alexis S. Wright; two step-grandchildren, Michael A. Melton and Barbara L. Brown and her husband Jamie and one step-great-grandchild, Taylor L. Brown.
Melvin was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday, (December 7, 2008) in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Bobby Campbell.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 2 to 4 p.m. in the funeral home and other times at his residence.
It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions to ones local Fire Department and Rescue in memory of Mr. Melvin Wright.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of the arrangements.
