Over the years, he transitioned his business into "Huffman Lawn and Garden" which he operated until March of 2020. He had one faithful employee, Sam Harris, who worked with him throughout the years. Melvin enjoyed playing and watching golf. He was a big fan of the Washington Redskins, the UVA Men's Basketball team, and TV games shows, and especially "Andy Griffth".

In addition to his parents, Mr. Huffman was preceded in death by sisters, Wilda Wenger (Lacy), Geraldine Shifflett (Sam), a brother, Paul Huffman (Flossie), and a beloved grandson, Luke Saufley. He was joined in death eight hours after his own death by his beloved son- in-law, Bill Chafin.
