Melvin Everett Huffman, 97, husband of Ellen (Wine) Huffman of Mount Sidney passed away Monday, January 4, 2021 at his residence.
Mr. Huffman was born in Augusta County, Virginia on November 23, 1923, a son of the late Everett Miley and Carrie Versa (Evers) Huffman.
Melvin was a faithful member of Salem Lutheran Church, where his faith grew while listening to Pastor Boggs. He joined the United States Navy in 1943 at the age of nineteen and served in World War II on the USS LST-371, where he served as First Class Ship's Cook. During the D-Day Normandy Invasion, he/his ship crossed the English Channel forty-two times delivering supplies, equipment, and troops. Mr. Huffman owned and operated his own business his entire adult life and purchased his first straight truck at age seventeen and eventually grew his business, "Huffman Transfer", into a fleet of trucks hauling livestock throughout various states in the East and Midwest. Over the years, he transitioned his business into "Huffman Lawn and Garden" which he operated until March of 2020. He had one faithful employee, Sam Harris, who worked with him throughout the years. Melvin enjoyed playing and watching golf. He was a big fan of the Washington Redskins, the UVA Men's Basketball team, and TV games shows, and especially "Andy Griffth".
In addition to his parents, Mr. Huffman was preceded in death by sisters, Wilda Wenger (Lacy), Geraldine Shifflett (Sam), a brother, Paul Huffman (Flossie), and a beloved grandson, Luke Saufley. He was joined in death eight hours after his own death by his beloved son- in-law, Bill Chafin.
He is survived by the love of his life and bride of seventy-three years, Ellen Wine Huffman; three beloved daughters, Dianne Huffman Chafin (Bill), Debra Huffman (Pat Wade), and Dauria Huffman; six grandchildren, Brooke Chafin Campbell (Michael), Douglas Wrenn II (Melody), Brett Chafin (Shannon), JennaRose Wrenn Mapstone (Jared), Erik Saufley (Mary Jo), and Nick Saufley (Robert); he was "GG" to eight great grandchildren, Abby and Conner Campbell, Paige Chafin, Harrison, Wrenn, and Matthias Mapstone, J. Harvey and Stella Wrenn; neighbor and friend, Nelson Cline; former son-in-law and family friend, Douglas Wrenn; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2021 in the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mount Sidney by Pastor Derek Boggs.
