Maxine Harding (Wine) Hawkins, 89, widow of Wade Samuel Hawkins of 89 Seawright Springs Road, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2010 in the Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville.
Mrs. Hawkins was born November 2, 1920 in Mount Sidney, a daughter of the late Jesse Barth J.B. Wine and Stella (Landes) Wine.
Maxine was retired from the Augusta County Schools where she worked in the Fort Defiance High School cafeteria. She was a life member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was an active member of the Women of the Church, taught Sunday school and served on the church council. Mrs. Hawkins was a homemaker who showed her love daily to her family and many friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Winston B. Wine, Sr. and a sister, Mrs. Charlotte (Wine) Harman.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda (Hawkins) Todd and her husband James D. Jim of Staunton and Doris (Hawkins) Grant of Verona; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice (Wine) Landes and her husband E. Russell, Sr. and Ellen (Wine) Huffman and her husband Melvin E. all of Mt. Sidney; three grandchildren, Stacey (Todd) Peters and her husband Dave, Kara (Todd) Reid and her husband Nate and Mark James Todd and his wife Tara; six great grandsons, Drew Peters, Todd Peters, Beau Peters, Carter Reid, Ben Reid and Henry Todd; a number of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2010 at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church by Pastor Christopher Carr, Mrs. Hawkins nephew Rev. P. A. Harman, Jr. and her niece, Rev. Debra Huffman assisting.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2010 in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Jim Todd, 1664 Barterbrook Road, Staunton.
Active pallbearers will be Ernie Landes, Jr., Dennis Landes, Frankie Hawkins, Kenny Hawkins, Lowell Sheets, Dennis Garber, William Dub Stansberry and Jack Todd.
