December 24, 1922 – January 3, 2024
Lura Myrtis (Coffey) Steele, 101, widow of Johnnie Rush Steele, of Almo Chapel Road in Spotswood, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024, in Stuarts Draft, Virginia surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Steele was born on December 24, 1922 at White Rock in Nelson County, Virginia, a daughter of the late Hercy Franklin and Lora Burgess (Ramsey) Coffey.
Mrs. Steele was a member of Old Providence ARP Church and was the oldest active member. She was also a member of Kingsway Help Center and the Steeles Tavern VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, flower gardening, word search, genealogy and time spent with her precious grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband of twenty-six years, Mrs. Steele was preceded in death by a son, Robert Franklin "Bobby" Steele; a daughter, Bonnie (Steele) Craig; two sisters, Marjorie C. Hatter and her husband Alonza Lester Hatter, Jr. and Lorine C. Allen and her husband Glenn H. Allen.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann (Steele) Lyle and her husband William "Bill" of Staunton; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn (Beverly) Steele of Stuarts Draft; two granddaughters, Michele Grimm and husband Rodney Schartiger and Tonya Grimm and husband Jason Grasmick; a step grandson, Bryan Scott Lyle and wife Chris; eleven great grandchildren, Jordan and Chris Weimer, Taylor and Trapper Wilson, Jessica and Justin Brown, Blake Yancey, Trace Schartiger, Braden Roughgarden, Morgan Adertons and husband Steve, Camren Lyle, Caden Lyle, Meghan Hansbrough and husband Tim, and Brad Schartiger; fourteen great great grandchildren, Kylie and Gavin Hemp, Emmie Smith, Audrielle Weimer, Oaklyn Weimer, Bella Weimer, Laila Weimer, Presley Brown, Parker Brown, Ella Wilson, Mattex Wilson, Oaklan Wilson, Fallon Wilson and Aleta Wilson; and a foster nephew, Philip Green.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2024 in Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory or other times at the residence of her daughter-in-law, Carolyn Steele, 251 Offliter Road in Stuarts Draft.
A Celebration of life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church by Pastor Billy Coffey and Pastor Patrick Malphus.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Jason Grasmick, Braden Roughgarden, Blake Yancey, Trapper Wilson, Justin Brown and Bryan Lyle.
It is suggested that those desiring make memorial contributions to Kingsway Help Center, 797 Spottswood Road, Steeles Tavern, VA 24476, the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medicine Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939 or the Old Providence Women of the Church, 879 Dutch Hollow Road, Middlebrook, VA 24459.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
