Lowell Warren Swim, 87, widower of Mabel Quick Swim, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, June 22, 2013. He was born May 10, 1926 to Etta Kester Swim and Walter Swim in Mercer County, West Virginia.
Lowell graduated from Radford High School and proudly served in the Army Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was Staff Sgt. of the 310th Bomb Squadron and flew 50 missions as a bombardier and gunner overseas. He was awarded the Purple Heart, The Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross and a number of other medals for his service.
On December 7, 1946, Lowell married Mabel Quick Swim, who preceded him in death on March 8, 2001. Besides his parents and wife, a brother Don Swim and a sister, Shirley Swim Ruben also preceded him in death. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Lowell retired in 1990 from Lofton Hopeman Brothers with 25 years service. He loved to hunt with his grandsons, great grandchildren and a number of other friends and family; he also enjoyed working in his building refinishing furniture. Lowell was a long time member of the Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren and was currently serving on the cemetery committee.
Lowell is survived by a daughter, Laura Ann Sandridge; two grandsons, Leslie Warren Sandridge and wife Stephanie of Churchville, and Charles Wade Sandridge and wife Christy of Stuarts Draft. He is also survived by four great grand children, Hunter, Holden, Jonathon and Natalie Brooke Sandridge, and by close friends and caregivers Eddie Taylor and Effie Parr; ten nephews and their spouses: Bobby and Barbara Kester, Jesse and Midge Kester, Gary Quick, Donnie and Suzanne Meeks, Charles and Elaine Quick, Ray and Judy Meek; Dale and Camilla Ruben, Mike Ruben, Stoney and Judy Quick and Douglas and Jill Quick; eight nieces and their spouses: Janet and David McAllister, Glenna Almarode, Vivian Losh, Sandra and Douglas Patterson, Shelvey Willmott, Karen and Don Sauer, Rhonda Johnston, Donna and John Batzel; and a number of cousins also survive.
Active pallbearers will be his two grandsons and four great grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be nieces and nephews and their spouses, cousin Sue Kester, friends E. L. Harris, Jim Adams, Frank Lam, Avis Koontz, Junior Williams, Dr. Robert Kennedy, Dr. Michael Ragosta, Dr. Geoffrey Weiss, Dr. Paul Lavine and Dr. Edward Rose.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013 in the Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren with Pastor Galen Combs officiating.
Burial will follow in the Barren Ridge Church Cemetery with military rites.
Family will receive friends from 5:00 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013 in Coffman Funeral Home, and other times at the home of Laura Sandridge, 73 Mill Stone Drive, Verona.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Barren Ridge Church Womens Fellowship, 1790 Barren Ridge Road, Staunton 24401 or to the Hospice of the Shenandoah, 64 Sports Medicine Drive, Fishersville, VA 22939.
