Lawrence Floyd "Nick" Smith, 83, husband of Patricia "Pat" (Soret) Smith, of Hillsmere Lane, Staunton, passed away on Sunday, January 16, 2022 with his family at his side.
Nick was born in Norfolk, Virginia on December 6, 1938, the son of the late Lawrence Frederick Smith and Clarice (Johnson) Smith.
He was a member at Memorial Baptist Church and the Staunton-Augusta County Rotary Club. He graduated from Granby High School and was a member of Tau Delta Tau Fraternity. He received a Bachelor of Science from Virginia Tech in 1962 and was a proud member of Sigma Lamda Fraternity. Nick was an avid Hokie fan and was a member of the Blacksburg Sports Club and Virginia Tech Hokie Club.
A lifelong banker, Nick spent much of his career serving the Staunton-Augusta County community.
He lived life to the fullest and never let an obstacle get in his way. He greatly cherished strong friendships, some of which dated to his high school days.
Poppa/Papa Nick delighted in cheering on his grandchildren in their various sports endeavors. Many sunsets were enjoyed by Nick with family and friends listening to Van Morrison, while having a cigar and maybe an adult beverage.
Surviving, in addition to his wife of 59 years, are two sons, Chris Smith and wife Suzie of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and Mason Smith and wife Ellen of Staunton; a daughter, Carrie Allison and husband Josh of Charlotte, North Carolina; and four grandchildren, Erin Smith, Clay Smith, Claire Allison and Michael Allison.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 5, 2022 in Coffman Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, P.O. Box 10307, Blacksburg, VA 24062 or Shriners Children's Hospital, 2900 N. Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, Florida 33607.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
