Obituary

Laverne Elaine Washington Bell passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

She was born on March 7, 1960, in Waynesboro, Virginia, to Francis (2002) and Raymond (2000) Washington. She was the fourth of eight children: Roxanne, Gerald (2006), Cornell, Beverly, Henry (2011), Audrey, and Lisa.

Laverne graduated from Spotswood High School and later moved to Staunton, where she raised her family. She was a dedicated worker and was well known for her job with the City of Staunton. People respected her presence, but she was also known for her kindness. She loved supporting her children and grandchildren at their events, attending church, and visiting farmers' markets. Laverne was always honest and spoke her mind. She worked hard to help her family grow and loved being part of their lives. Laverne was a daughter, sister, mother, and friend, and she will always be missed.

She is survived by her children: Latoya, Sedquwick, Alechia, Monica, Shannon, and Steven. She was proud to say she had 17 grandchildren, which include O'Shay, Knighguane, Jeremiah, Ashanta, Yasmine, Marrissa, Izaiyah-Ale, Kemonte, Serenity, Tariq-Ale, Olivah, Z’aiyana, Kiyah, Ayden, Ariel, Ta'Lasia, and Zoe. She also leaves behind 12 great-grandchildren.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
