Laura Pauline (Simmons) Carwell, 94, widow of Lewis Harold Carwell, formerly of Essex Drive, Staunton, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at Brookdale of Staunton.

Mrs. Carwell was born in Staunton, Virginia on October 28, 1929, a daughter of the late Harry Elbert Simmons and Effie Mae (Moats) Simmons.

Laura was an active member of Staunton First Church of God and retired as a seamstress from Genesco. She loved reading and enjoyed cooking and baking.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents and husband of seventy-two years, Mrs. Carwell was preceded by a daughter, Jacqueline Miller; her step-mother, Helen Virginia Simmons; four brothers, Arlie Simmons, Ralph Simmons, Elmer Simmons, and Claude Simmons; and three sisters, Virginia (Simmons) McEnerney, Bessie (Simmons) McGrady, and Helen (Simmons) Steed.

Surviving, is a son, Dennis J. Carwell and his wife, Rhonda of Staunton; three grandchildren, Stephanie Berry, Emily Carwell, and Logan Truxell; three great-grandchildren, Taylor, Ian, and Grayson; a half-brother, Tommy Simmons; a half-sister, Sissy Funk; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at Staunton First Church of God by Pastor Kyle Yates. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Burial will follow the memorial service in Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
