Kaarin Anne (Tervo) Downey, 67, wife of John V. Downey of 2007 N. Augusta Street, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 at her residence.
Mrs. Downey was born at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, a daughter of noble, hardworking Finnish parents, the late Aarne and Alta (Hooper) Tervo.
Kaarin led an exciting life with her Navy family, living in England, Cuba, and Washington, DC. As a teenager in CT, she became a devoted member of the Congregational Church, an excellent student and a fabric artist, perfecting needlework of all types. Kaarin went to college at Randolph Macon Womens College in VA, where she excelled in biology and chemistry and worked following graduation at Georgetown University and NIMH. In her 30s she traveled to New Jersey to be closer to her family and there she met and married John Downey and worked with him in a family business. She loved to garden and was an enthusiastic cook. Mrs. Downeys passion was to become a student of Christian faith spending the last decades of her life as devout Christian.
Surviving in addition to her husband, is a sister, Leslie Alta Tervo of Tolland, CT; two nieces, Erica Burkhart and Alexander Burkhart; and a great-niece, Lumi Stone.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A Graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2015 in the Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Fishersville by Rev. Tully Hunter.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
