Judith Wilkerson Zdinak (77) passed away peacefully on September 12, 2023 after gracefully and courageously fighting illness for the past eight years.

Born to Anthony Perkins, Sr., and Oval (Robertson) Wilkerson on September 23, 1945, she was the youngest of 13 children.

Preceded in passing by her husband, Dr. Edward Zdinak; seven brothers, Warren, Ronald, Burnette, Frank, Carl, Paul, and Anthony, Jr.; and four sisters, Frances, Evelyn, Ann, and Helen.

She is survived by her brother, Fred Wilkerson (Frances); sister-in-law, Charlotte Wilkerson; sons, Aaron and Shawn Zdinak; five grandchildren, Nicolas, Brianna, Magdelene, Edward, and Braelyn; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A teacher in the Rockbridge County Public School system for 35 years, Judy was a woman ahead of her time, in that she was able to balance being a devoted wife and mother while progressing a successful career of passionate teaching. Judy brought understanding to every situation she encountered. Never quick to anger and willing to understand another's perspective, she consistently applied her principles of family and God, which resulted in her building lifelong, fulfilling, and rewarding relationships.

"Mrs. Z," as her students called her, never took herself too seriously but made her expectations clear as she masterfully managed her classrooms. Grandma was always open armed, often allowing rules that applied at home to somehow cease to exist when the little ones were in her care or at her house.

Mom's legacy is not just what she accomplished, but how she accomplished it. Her actions were positive, honest, empathetic, and loving and she was driven for the betterment of others above herself. Before illness prevented her from doing so, Judy devoted time to those who were sick and had no one to visit them, offering encouragement and friendship.

A church service will be held on Tuesday, September 19 (10:00am) at the Staunton Church of the Brethren followed by a graveside ceremony at Thornrose cemetery with a light lunch concluding.
