Adelaide Joy Acord Dabney (79) passed away on January 7, 2010. Mrs. Dabney was born January 30, 1930 in Clifton Forge. She was the daughter of Walter Scott Jackson and Adelaide Gladys Hicks Acord. She married her lifetime sweetheart, Eugene (Jake) Huntsberry Dabney, Jr. on February 10, 1951. Mrs. Dabney graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and Dunsmore School of Business. She began work as a secretary for Rudolph Bumgardner, Westinghouse Corp. of Verona then employed her for many years as the secretary to the General Manager. In 1969, she started working for Gen. Archibald Sproul as the Executive Secretary for Virginia International Company and retired from the company in 1985. She participated for many years in the Lions Club Minstrel productions and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Firemans Ladies Auxiliary. She volunteered for the Kings Daughter Auxiliary and the SPCA for many years. She has lived the last 9 years in Louisville, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Jacqueline Lauer. She is survived by her daughters, Lucie Scott Dabney Austin (Erle Harris) and Dr. Lisa Gene Dabney, her grandsons, Christopher Scott Austin, Hunter Tazewell Austin, Waller Huntsberry Austin, (Whitney Blaine) and Jonathan Stuart Austin. Her sister Lucie Jane Kirby and her aunt Rosalind Hicks Pierce and many nieces and nephews also survive her. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, aunt and friend. She had a terrific sense of humor, was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles. Her family and friends will sadly miss their Joy. The family is eternally grateful for the loving care to Joy by the staff of the Brownsboro Hills Nursing Center and the staff of HOSPARUS. A memorial service will be handled by Coffman Funeral Home at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to HOSPARUS, PO Box 34525, Louisville, KY, 40232-9892.
