John Spencer Kelly, Sr., 74, husband of Shirley M. Kelly of 1500 North Coalter Street, Apartment E-1 passed away Monday, (December 28, 2009) at his residence.
Mr. Kelly was born January 10, 1935 in Whitakers, NC, a son of the late Charles Carr and Alberta (Denby) Kelly.
John was a fourteen year veteran of the United States Air Force. He spent the past eleven years with the Staunton Police Department as an Administrative Assistant after retiring from Mary Baldwin College with twenty years of service as Director of Security and Safety. John served twenty-one years as a Staunton Reserve Police Officer with the position of Director of Reserve Police Operations. He was active for many years in the Augusta Lions Club where he held many offices throughout his years of service, a volunteer with the Staunton Augusta Rescue Squad as a Dispatcher. John previously served on the Staunton Parking Commission and Staunton Transportation and Safety Commission. Mr. Kelly loved to serve others.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Starr Marie and Kellie Marie Kelly and two nephews, Charles Scott and James Walter Kelly.
Surviving in addition to his wife of fortythree years are two daughters and sons-in-law, Jody Trottier and her husband Jim of East Thetford, VT, Deana Stearns and her husband Fred of Lyme, NH; one son and daughter-in-law, John S. Kelly, Jr. and his wife Edith of Staunton; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles T. Kelly and his wife Grace of Cary, NC; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Stogdale and her husband Jim of Churchville, VA and Christine Cheasty and her husband Jack of Clarksville, TN; nine grandchildren, Tawnya Baker and her husband Paul, Corey Kingsbury and his wife Thelma, Kristina Kingsbury, Darcy Smith and her husband Dennis, Whitney Hatch and her husband Jonathan, Michael Henderson, Joshua Cheasty, Rachel Cheasty and Jonathan Kelly; one nephew, Kevin Kelly and his wife Laura of Algonquin, IL; thirteen great-grandchildren and two great nieces; two very close friends, Fred Leach and Bob Rose, also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Kelly will be private.
The family will receive friends at his residence.
