MT. SOLON:JEAN ELLEN (BUTLER) VIEL
Jean Butler Viel, 85, widow of William Conrad Viel, Sr. of Mt. Solon, Virginia died Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville, Virginia.
She was born in Staunton, Virginia, the daughter of the late Martin and Lucy (Hanger) Viel.
After graduating from Beverly Manor High School she attended Mary Baldwin College and the Rockingham County School of Nursing.
In 1947, she married US Navy QMS1 William Conrad Viel, Sr., who preceded her in death in 1974. They lived in Staunton, Virginia where their two sons were born. In 1962 they moved to Syracuse, New York where Bill was the Firestone District Manager.
Jean worked in administration at Upstate University Hospital for many years, and then ran the post office at Roys Big M on Westcott Street in Syracuse before returning to Virginia. Jean had a lovely voice and enjoyed singing in her church choirs, Olivet Presbyterian Church in Staunton and Pebble Hill Presbyterian Church in Syracuse. She sang with the Staunton Choral Society and the Syracuse Symphony Chorus. She volunteered as a dispatcher for EMS services in Virginia, Syracuse and at Watkins Glen Race Medical. Upon her return to Virginia, she became actively involved in the AARP Widowed Persons Service, Staunton Womens Club, Deanne Holt Ladies Auxiliary, a charter member of the Valley Republican Womens Auxiliary, and served as Social Program chair and then President of the Glenmore Hunt Club.
She traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe with her dear friend Dr Patricia Numann. She enjoyed her large extended family and many friends.
She was proud that her older son, Bill, became a Syracuse firefighter and her younger son, David, a police officer initially in Syracuse and then League City, Texas.
Jean is survived by her sons William C. Viel, Jr. and wife Sharon, Syracuse, NY and David M. Viel and wife Gail, League City, Texas, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and many friends as well as her extended family.
A memorial service will be conducted 4:00 p.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012 at Olivet Presbyterian Church by Pastor Harry Johns. The family will receive friends at 3:30 p.m. prior to and after the service.
Interment will be private in Augusta Memorial Park, Waynesboro, Virginia.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
