Jay Allen Buerkel, 73, husband of Susan (Reider) Buerkel, passed away Monday, July 14, 2014, in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.
Mr. Buerkel was born April 2, 1941, in Cleveland, OH, a son of the late John and Juanita (Helphrey) Buerkel.
Jay was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church and served in the United States Navy. He was a man of many talents and enjoyed building, crafting, and customizing motorcycles and cars.
Surviving in addition to his wife of forty-five years are two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Beth Buerkel of Winchester and Rev. Margaret Meg Hunn and her husband Rev. Canon Michael of Raleigh, NC; a brother, James Buerkel and his wife Carina of Cleveland, OH; two sisters, Julianne Shippitka and her husband Vince of Cleveland, Ohio and Johanna McFadden and her husband Douglas of Kanab, Utah; three grandchildren, Dexter Hunn, Murphy Hunn, and Dosie Hunn; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A Memorial service will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2014, in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church by Reverend Shelby Ochs Owen. The family will receive friends following the service.
