James Dorsey Smiley, Jr.'s Obituary

James Dorsey Smiley, Jr., 89, widower of Helen (Garber) Smiley, of 35 Maple Drive, passed away Saturday, August 31, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Smiley was born in Rockbridge County on May 15, 1924, a son of the late James Dorsey, Sr. and Willie Mae (Fox) Smiley.

As a young man, Mr. Smiley attended Pisgah Chapel and New Providence Church, and later became a member of Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church along with his wife. He was a veteran of the United States Army, grew up on a farm and was employed by Augusta Farm Bureau as a feed mill laborer with 32 years of service. Jim enjoyed gardening, fishing and reminiscing with family and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Smiley was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Smiley and Sam Smiley.

Surviving is a beloved step-daughter, Linda Lucus and her husband Thomas of Fort Defiance; two brothers, Wallace Smiley of Staunton and Joe Smiley of Rockbridge Baths; five sisters, Maxine Nutty of Staunton, Alice Shull of Fairfield, Phyllis Gibson, Betty Huffman and Patsy Crosby, all of Staunton; two step-grandchildren, Jonathan Lucus and wife Qiaojue Yu of Alexandria, and Stephanie Lucus and husband Paul Boyes of Seattle, WA; three step-great grandchildren, Kian Lucus, Penelope Boyes and Olivia Boyes; three sisters-in-law, Agnes Virginia (Reese) Smiley, Eve (Garber) Sours and Delois Dee (Whitesell) Smiley; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Oaklawn Memory Gardens by Rev. Elizabeth McCrary.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2013 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.

It is suggested that those desiring make memorial contributions to the Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, Building Fund, Post Office Box 118, Fort Defiance, VA 24437.
