James Donald "Don" Hanger, 86, husband of Mary Sue (Campbell) Hanger of 18 Blair Hill Lane, Staunton, passed away Friday, June 3, 2022 at Augusta Health in Fishersville, Virginia.

Mr. Hanger was born in Staunton, Virginia on April 4, 1936, a son of the late Frank Clemmer Hanger and Lorena (Snyder) Hanger.

Don was a life-long member of Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, a veteran of the United States National Guard and a member of the Middlebrook Ruritan Club.

For most of his career, Mr. Hanger was a teacher, teaching electrical wiring courses at Valley Vocational Technical Center for over thirty years. After retiring, he devoted more of his time to operating Berry Moore Farm.  Mr. Hanger was always civic-minded and loved Augusta County. He proudly served twelve years on its Board of Supervisors, where he was Chairman or Vice-Chairman for six of those years.  He was also a Board Member of the Augusta County Service Authority for number of years. He was a founding member of Augusta Expo, serving as its second president, and helped to re-establish the annual County Fair in the 1970s. He was a leader in his church and as an active Ruritan, he once served as Chairman of its National Convention.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, Mr. Hanger is survived by a daughter, Teresa S. Hanger and husband Thomas D. Bridgers, Jr. of Greenville; two sons, Neil C. Hanger and wife Penny of Staunton, and Scott A. Hanger of Greenville; a brother, Thomas L. Hanger and wife Joyce of Staunton; a granddaughter, Brittany Pitsenbarger and husband Daniel; twin great-grandchildren, Mason Dale Pitsenbarger and Saylor Grace Pitsenbarger; and a very special and devoted friend, Joe Vecchioli.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2022 at the residence.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2022 in the Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church Cemetery by Pastor Lance Braun, with a reception in the church social hall following the service.

The family wishes to express a sincere "Thank You" to Dr. Rob Marsh and his associates, to the UVA Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and to the late Dr. H. Lynn Moore, Jr.

It is suggested those desiring make memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church, 334 Mt. Tabor Road, Staunton, Virginia 24401.
