Herbert Widener
STAUNTON:
Herbert Herb Widener, 83, husband of Gertrude Judy (Peters) Widener of 41 Shutterlee Mill Lane passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at his residence.
Mr. Widener was born October 15, 1928 in Laurel Bloomery, TN,
a son of the late Bishop and Lela (Leftman) Widener.
Mr. Widener was a member of the Elk Run Church of the Brethren in Churchville. Prior to his retirement he was employed by Smiths Transfer with twenty-nine years of service as a truck driver and a member of the Teamsters Local #29. Mr. Widener was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of the American Legion Post #13 where he managed the shooting matches for a number of years. He built pick-up campers, worked on guns and built furniture. Herb loved to tell jokes and to make people laugh. Please smile when you think of him.
In addition to his parents Mr. Widener was preceded in death by two brothers, Estel Widener and James Widener.
Surviving in addition to his wife of thirty-nine years is a son, Greg Widener and a daughter, Sherry W. Ysais both of Houston TX; step-daughter, Robyn L. Burke of Staunton; a sister, Ruby Johnson and her husband Noah of Johnson City, TN; sister-in-law, Marie Widener of TN; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a very special friend who was like a son, Keith Morris; Heather Morris who was like a granddaughter and was Paw Paws Pumpkin Head, both of Staunton; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
A Graveside Service will be conducted 12:00 noon, Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
A Celebration of Life will follow at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 in the Elk Run Church of the Brethren by Pastor Pete Leddy.
The family will receive friends 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2012 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the residence.
Active pallbearers will be Paul Wolfe, Jesse Sprouse, Kermit Roberts, Charles Bird, Ashby Williams and David Pederson.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Elk Run Church of the Brethren, c/o of Mrs. Pam Flora, 1599 Scenic Highway, Churchville, VA 24421.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
