Henry Richard Koenig's Obituary

Henry Richard Koenig, husband of Jane (Saunders) Koenig passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at his home in Staunton, VA surrounded by family.

Mr. Koenig was born on August 22, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA and was the son of the late William and Natalie (Foley) Koenig.

He was a graduate of Northeast High School in Philadelphia and spent two years at The University of Pennsylvania where he was on the fencing team. He served for two years in the United States Army where he played the bagpipes in the Army band.

Mr. Koenig spent four years in Seattle, WA before moving back to the east coast and settling his young family in Denville, NJ where they spent 26 years. In 1991, he retired from Foster-Wheeler after 20+ years as a mechanical engineer. He then spent his retirement with his loving wife in Oriental, NC and Saylorsburg, PA before moving to Staunton, VA.

As a young adult, Mr. Koenig enjoyed car racing and derbies. He was a talented musician, who in addition to playing the bagpipes, also played slide trombone, guitar and banjo. Always a confident putterer, he had a healthy disregard for instruction manuals. Mr. Koenig was an avid reader who often shared obscure facts and other information that he had learned from his book collection. This enabled him to excel at the crossword puzzles he so enjoyed. In his retirement, his love for fencing was rekindled when he volunteered his time at the local high school as a fencing coach. Mr. Koenig loved the outdoors and was a skilled sailor and also enjoyed bicycling, motor biking and skiing. In fact, he was able to continue skiing well into his 70s.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Kurt Hilss, three grandchildren, Michael, Daniel and Kyle, all of Lexington, VA and a brother, William A Koenig, Jr. of Venice, FL.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn L. Koenig and his sister, Marie Louise Koenig.

A private graveside service will take place on Friday, August 10, 2012 at Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover, NJ.
