Henry Preston Breeding's Obituary
Henry Preston Breeding will be remembered for his joyful, generous spirit and his enduring love for his family and community. He passed away peacefully with his wife of nearly 67 years, Margaret, by his side on September 21, 2021, at age 89.
Henry was born on August 17, 1932, in Russell County, Virginia, to Linzy and Bessie Rhea Breeding. He was 8 of 13 children raised in Russell County. He later served our country as a medic in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and as a volunteer fire fighter in Washington County, Virginia for over 10 years. After moving to the Staunton area in 1970, Henry worked at American Safety Razor (ASR), retiring after 22 years of service. He was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Anyone who knew Henry will never forget his smile and laugh as well as his warmth and concern for others. He could always be found outside in the garden or tinkering in the garage, and anyone who came to visit never wanted for a thing - particularly when it came to a meal. His grandchildren, who knew him as Papaw, were his pride and joy - and they will forever remember his love and kindness.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, nine siblings and a granddaughter, Angie Ruoto.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, of nearly 67 years; children, Thelma Smith and Wayne, Mike Breeding and Becky, and Andy Breeding and Dana; grandchildren, Preston Smith and Sarah, Summer Brooks and Dougie, Beth, Clara, and Chloe Breeding, and Joe Ruoto; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Sherman Breeding and Phyllis; two sisters, Martha Snyder and Stacey and Nellie Lasley and Robert; and many loving family members.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 24, at 11 a.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church, followed by an outdoor reception for family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made on Henry's behalf to New Hope United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 86, New Hope, VA 24469.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive in Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
