Helen Gladys Varner's Obituary

Helen Gladys (Campbell) Varner, 74, wife of Robert L. Varner, of 1393 Middlebrook Road, passed away Friday, October 9, 2009 at her home surrounded by family.
She was born in Swoope, Virginia on March 20, 1935, a daughter of the late Archie Campbell and Carrie Cason Campbell.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Archie Pete Campbell and an infant brother, Johnny Campbell.
Mrs. Varner was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Swoope where she served as Sunday School Treasurer and on other various committees. She was retired from Genesco-L-Greif Company after more than 38 years of service. She was a member of the Staunton Moose, where she served as Senior Regent and Star Recorder.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 54 years is a daughter and son-in-law, Pennie Renee Smith and her husband Ernest Dale Smith of Middlebrook; a grandson whom she dearly loved, Travis Scott Smith of Middlebrook; a brother and sister-in-law, Cecil T. Campbell and his wife Carolyn of Waynesboro; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Sallie Feaganes and her husband Otis of Waynesboro and Pauline Campbell and her husband Calvin Earl of Fishersville; a very loving and caring neighbor and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Juanita and Homer Maddox of Staunton; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Jane Swisher and her husband Eugene of Lexington and Carletta Frank of Singers Glen; a brother-in-law, William H. Varner of Staunton; two special great nieces, Carrie Lynn and Sara Alicia Snead both of Stuarts Draft and a number of other nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, 2009 in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Janet Knott and Daniel and Steven Carter.
Burial will follow in the Oaklawn Mausoleum \u0026 Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Glenn Maddox, Gene McIlwee, Barry Siple, Coy Brooks, Bobby Varner and Eddie Randy Snead.
Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, nieces and other family members attending the service.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009 in the funeral home and other times at her residence.
The family wishes to thank the Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah for the special care given to our beloved wife and mother during her time of illness.
It is suggested those desiring to make memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1920 H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, VA 22801 and to the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Building Fund, PO Box 31, Swoope, VA 24479.
