Helen G. Smiley
VERONA
Helen LaVerne (Garber) Smiley, 90, wife of James Dorsey Smiley of 35 Maple Drive, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2012 in Envoy of Staunton.
Mrs. Smiley was born on July 16, 1921 in Mt. Sidney, Virginia, a daughter of the late Dewey McKinley and Ethel (Johnson) Garber.
Helen was an active member of Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church where she attended and was a member of the Womens Church Circle. She enjoyed gardening and working with her flowers. She was a volunteer of the K.D.H. thrift shop and a 1940 graduate of Mount Sidney High School.
Mrs. Smiley was an amazingly strong lady facing many difficulties throughout her life but never complained. She loved her family very much and was always pleasant to be around.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Smiley was preceded in death by two brothers, Malcolm and Jay Garber and two sisters, June Leavell and Ann Meyerhoffer.
Surviving in addition to her husband of 43 years, is a daughter Linda F. Lucus and her husband Thomas J. of Fort Defiance; a sister, Eve Sours of Luray; two grandchildren, Stefanie Lucus and her husband Paul Boyes; Jonathan Lucus and his wife Qiaojue Yu; two great grandchildren, Penelope and Olivia Boyes; close neighbors and special friends, Bill and Helen Sullivan and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
A Celebration of life will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 23, 2012, in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Beth McCrary.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence.
Active pallbearers will be Steven Sours, Jeff Lucus, Joe Lucus, Charles Garber, John Brooks, Bill Sullivan, J.B. Smiley, Jr. and Matt Cason.
The family would like to thank Dr. Daniel Wachspress and staff at Envoy of Staunton and their friends Helen and Bill Sullivan for their companionship and care for Helen during her many illnesses.
