Obituary

Hazel “Judith” (Busch) Maxwell, 84, of Stuarts Draft, passed away on Friday, July 24, 2026 at her residence.

Judie was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia on December 26, 1941, the daughter of the late Noble Gerald Busch and Delta Lee (Davis) Busch.

She graduated from Wirt County High School and Glenville State College. Judie began her teaching career in a one room school house in Wirt County, West Virginia. She taught in West Virginia until moving to Virginia. Once she moved to Virginia, her career continued at Stuarts Draft Middle School, teaching there from its opening in 1979 until her retirement in 2006. During this time, she served as the president of Augusta County Education Association. She retired with over 45 years in education. Judie enjoyed reading, traveling and holding babies.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Rodney Busch and Kendall Busch.

She is survived by a daughter, Jorena B. Simpkins of Lynchburg; a son, Robert C. Maxwell, II, and his wife Julie of Fishersville; four grandchildren, Chase Robert Simpkins and his wife Molly, Davis Paul Simpkins and his fiancée Delaney, Bryson Scott Simpkins, and Emma Kate Sherman Maxwell; a brother, Trent Busch; two nieces, Kelli White and Laura Carper; a nephew, Brett Busch; special family friends, Ann and Bob Higgins, Ben Higgins, Sara Fitzgerald and their families, Linda Weekley and Karen Bevins.

The family will receive friends 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, 2026 at Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.

A private burial will be held at a later date in the Hartley Cemetery in West Virginia.

If desired, in lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Hartley Cemetery, c/o Harry Dye, 440 Hartley Ridge, Brohard, WV 26138 or to the ACG Hospice, 427 Lee Jackson Hwy, A3, Staunton, VA 24401.
