Greta Mae (Baker) Gayhart, 91, widow of Tracy Stuart Gayhart, of Verona, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg.
Mrs. Gayhart was born in Ronceverte, West Virginia on June 19, 1935, a daughter of the late Atlee Fred Baker and Salina Mary (Morgan) Baker Feamster.
Greta was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker who dedicated her life to raising her children and later found joy in caring for and babysitting her grandchildren. A faithful member of Third Presbyterian Church, she treasured reading her Bible and living out her quiet faith each day. Greta found joy in life's simple pleasures, especially working crossword puzzles and spending peaceful moments on her back porch, taking in the beauty of nature. She had a passion for gardening and took great pride in tending to her flowers and plants. She also enjoyed camping with her family, creating cherished memories in the outdoors. Greta was happiest in the kitchen, preparing delicious meals for those she loved and making everyone feel welcome around her table. Her quiet faith, loving heart, and appreciation for life's everyday blessings will be fondly remembered by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband of forty-nine years, Mrs. Gayhart was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Baker; and a granddaughter, Jennifer Weikle.
Surviving, are three sons, Jeff McDaniel and his wife, Jane of Verona, Greg McDaniel and his wife, Cathy of Staunton, and Rev. Roger McDaniel and his wife, Debbie of WV; a daughter, Johnna Hanger and her husband, Scott of Verona; a sister, Dreama Jean Morgan of WV; two brothers, Authur Lee Baker and James Dean “Jim” Baker both of WV; grandchildren, Katie, Atlee and his wife, Katie, Conner and his wife, Reagan, Ray and his wife, Telia, Jason and his wife, Andi, and Steve and his wife, Sabrina; eight great-grandchildren; and special friend, Sharon Kern.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at Third Presbyterian Church. A celebration of life service will follow at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. Roger McDaniel and Pastor Patrick Pettit.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Atlee Hanger, Conner McDaniel, Eddie Mozingo, Johnny Mozingo, Steve Knight, and Scott Hanger.
Honorary pallbearers will be Walter Mack, David Meeks, and George Mozingo.
It is suggested that those desiring make memorial contributions to Third Presbyterian Church, 1313 Barterbrook Road, Staunton, VA 24401.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Greta's caregivers for the care, compassion, and kindness they so generously shared.
Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of her arrangements.
