Glenn Ryan Thayer, 88, widower of Mary Estelle (Oliver) Thayer of 13 Fleetwood Road, passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015 at his residence.
Mr. Thayer was born September 8, 1926 in Staunton, a son of the late John Chambers and Minnie Agnes (Ryan) Thayer.
Glenn was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church and a veteran of the United States Navy. He retired from E.I. DuPont in 1984 after forty years in the maintenance department and he will be remembered for his strong work ethic. Mr. Thayer was known by his friends and family as a very humble, kind and gentle man, who would fix just about anything that needed fixing either for his family or even for a stranger. Glenn is best known by his family as a Jack-of-all Trades.
In addition to his parents and wife of 58 years, Mr. Thayer was preceded in death by his sister Evelyn Mae (Thayer) Silling and her husband Roy. G. Silling and a son-in-law, James H. Dick.
Mr. Thayer was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include four daughters, Rebecca Jean (Thayer) Dick and Wanda Lee Thayer both of Staunton, Deborah Glenn (Thayer) Snyder and her husband Danny of Fishersville and Pamela Kay (Thayer) Swink and her husband Keith of Staunton; eight grandchildren, Stephanie T. Leach and husband, Ashley, James G. Snyder and wife Ashley, Phillip S. Snyder and wife Kristen, Jennifer L. Dick, Justin K. Swink and girlfriend Melissa C. Hemish, Jillian D. Moser and husband Chandler, Amanda K. Swink and Jay A. Jack DiCicco, II; and six great grandchildren, Ryan P. Leach, Zoe A. Payne, Liam A. Snyder, Oliver Reid Paxton Leach, Kaitlyn Grace Hemish-Swink and Rory A. Snyder; and special companion Ginger, his loyal chocolate lab.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2015, in the Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at his residence.
A Celebration of life will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2015, in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. William Stewart.
Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Roger Moran, Michael A. Reese, James G. Snyder, Phillip S. Snyder, Justin K. Swink, Jay A. Jack DiCicco, II, Ashley S. Leach and Ronald G. Fitzgerald.
