Obituary

Georgia Ann (Fortney) Carter, 83, widow of Edward Baskerville Carter, Jr. of Swoope, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at the Shenandoah Hospice House in Fishersville.

Georgia was born in Staunton, Virginia on September 24, 1939, a daughter of the late Ernest Duane Fortney, Sr. and Agnes Marie (Davis) Fortney.

Georgia was an active member of the Estaline Valley Church of the Nazarene where she enjoyed singing in the choir. She was also a member of the senior bingo community. Georgia loved her cats, watching nature, crocheting afghans for her family, and most of all, she loved spending time with her beautiful daughters and their families. On September 10, 1990, she soloed her husband's airplane, a great milestone in her life.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents and husband of sixty-five years, Georgia was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest D. "Junior" Fortney, Jr.; and two sisters, JoEtta Hemp and Betty Smith.

Surviving, are four daughters, Mildred Ann Davis and her husband, Kiger of Staunton, Patricia Elaine "Patty" Lohrey and her husband, Marty of Raphine, Angela Dawn Leach and her husband, Ray of Fishersville, and Shearon June Humphreys and her husband, Tommy of  Craigsville; six grandchildren, Troy and his wife, Melody, Brandy and her husband, Ben, Joe, Candi and her husband, John, Cody and his wife, Jillian, and Nikki and her husband, Jacob; eight great-grandchildren, Haley, Chloe, Noah, Sam, Ian, Carter, Ashby, and Reid; special cousins, Alice Wilkerson and Don Davis; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 28, 2022 in the Coffman Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Tim Thomas and Pastor Billy Curry. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.

Burial will follow in Thornrose Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be her sons-in-law and grandsons, Kiger, Marty, Ray, Tommy, Troy, Joe, Cody, Ben, John, and Jacob.

Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express a sincere "Thank you" to the staff at Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah, and the many folks who have helped them through this difficult time.
