George Howard Hanger's Obituary

George Howard Hanger, age 97, of Staunton passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.

He was born November 27, 1917 in Arbor Hill, a son of Blair Bowman and Lelia
Clemmer Hanger.

George graduated from Middlebrook High School and was an accomplished athlete, named to the 1948 Bi-State (Virginia and West Virginia) baseball team and played on the Staunton Presidents baseball team. He served in the Army Air Corps in England during World War II. He returned home and joined Worthington Hardware Company in Staunton where he worked until his retirement. For the past thirty years he was the proprietor of Warehouse Antiques and Collectibles in the Worthington Hardware store. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Staunton.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Betty Harris Hanger of Staunton; daughter Kay Howard Hanger Carter of Staunton, daughter Lynn Harris Hanger Hill and husband Joe of Mount Sidney, son William Blair Hanger and wife Sandra of Weyers Cave, and daughter Jane Ann Hanger and companion Darrell Miller of Swoope; eleven grandchildren, Donna Howard Carter Morris and husband David, John David Carter, Ann Cook Hill and husband Joshua Gutshall, Kay Henry Hill Foy and husband Andrew, James Lynn Hill and wife Morgan, George William Hanger, Jennifer Lynn Hanger and husband Adam McIlwain, Oliver Blair Hanger and wife Jessica, Jane Clark Hanger, Sally Daniel Roadcap Garvey and husband Ray, and Lee Hanger Roadcap; sixteen great-grandchildren, Carter William Morris, Jake Edward Morris, Chase Meridian Carter, Solomon Joss Carter, Henry Hill Gutshall, Augustus Bowman Gutshall, Elizabeth Allen Gutshall, Frederick Hanger Gutshall, Thomas Henry Foy, Georgia Carolynn Foy, Faron William Hill, Luke William McIlwain, Thomas George McIlwain, Addison Mae Hanger, Owen Blair Garvey, and Bowman Daniel Garvey. He is also survived by brother Blair Bowman Hanger and wife Jo Lee and brother William Ray Hanger and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special neighbors and dear friends Joe and Kenneth Price and fellow farmer Charlie Hildebrand.

He was preceded in death by siblings Frank Clemmer Hanger, Anna Virginia Hanger Price, Rachel Catherine Hanger Bailey, and Robert Eugene Hanger.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 31, at Central United Methodist Church in Staunton.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Augusta Health Foundation, Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 1000, Fishersville VA 22939.

Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory, 230 Frontier Drive, Staunton is in charge of his arrangements.
