Eugene Stuart Gene Powell, 89, husband of Shirley (Chandler) Powell, of 916 Bailey Road, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2014, in the Royal Care Senior Living in Staunton.
Mr. Powell was born in Verona, Virginia on September 18, 1925, a son of the late Broaddus Eugene Powell and Louise (Sutton) Powell Critzer.
Gene was a member of the Middle River Church of the Brethren, a Veteran of the United States Army serving as a Military Policeman and was retired from Reynolds Metal Corporation, (now Alcoa) as a forklift operator. Mr. Powell was known for his strong work ethic and his proudest hobbies were spending time with his family and farming.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Powell was preceded in death by a son, Keith D. Powell.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 67 years are two sons; Larry E. Powell and his wife Linda S. and Gary L. Powell and his wife Chris B. both of Fort Defiance; a brother, Tommie Leon Powell of Fort Defiance; a sister, Mary Lee (Powell) Dennison of Mt. Sidney; six grandchildren; Stephanie P. Lang and husband John, Kimberly P. Barry and husband Norman, Wendy P. Weldon and husband Blake, Adam S. Powell, Jonathon L. Powell and Madison L. Powell; six great-grandchildren, Hannah B. Barry, Logan D. Barry, Emily A. Lang, Bethany R. Lang, Hailee L. Lang and Jacob W. Lang; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, December 28, 2014 in Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A private graveside service will be held in Oaklawn Memory Gardens by Pastor David Ball.
