Elizabeth Liz (Smith) Painter, 85, wife of James Henry Painter of Staunton, passed away Friday, August 4, 2017 at Brookdale Senior Living in Staunton.
Mrs. Painter was born on January 31, 1932 in McDowell, Virginia, a daughter of
the late Isaac Clay Bob and Rose Rosie (Puffenbarger) Smith.
Elizabeth graduated with honors from McDowell High School, representing her class as valedictorian. She was a charter member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church and worked for the City of Staunton in the Commissioner of Revenues office as Deputy Commissioner and retired with thirty-five years of service. Mrs. Painter was a member of the Staunton Lioness Club and enjoyed gardening especially growing roses and tomatoes.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Painter was preceded in death by four brothers, Howard Rankin Smith, Wilmer Carl Smith, Virgil Jack Smith, and Louie Walter Smith; and a sister, Margie OBrien.
Surviving in addition to her husband of sixty-one years, is a son Ronald Curtis Ron Painter and his wife Donna of Atlanta, Georgia; a daughter, Cynthia Cindy Painter of Wytheville; a sister, Gladys Fockler and her husband Howard of Staunton; and two grandchildren, Ashley McElreath and husband Mark and Joshua Painter; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2017 in Coffman Funeral Home and Crematory.
A Celebration of life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, 2017 in the Covenant Presbyterian Church by Pastor John Peterson.
Burial will follow in Oaklawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens.
